After a call for help from friends, we quickly took this Bernese boy into care and after a few days took him in permanently. This became necessary because the owner had fallen seriously ill and was therefore unfortunately no longer able to look after this boy in a manner appropriate to his species.
Of course, we thought about whether and how this could work. We already have a few Bernese. Girls and boys. How do they all get on with each other? Do they fight? Do they cuddle? Do they just leave each other alone?
Of course, we didn’t forget our daughter during all these considerations. How could it be otherwise, she knows our Wuzis and they know her. And that works without any problems. Her favourite dogs! With respect, decency, common sense, the necessary assertiveness but also the necessary sensitivity.
But how does Elvis react? Does he know children? Is he scared? How does he deal with the possibly unfamiliar situation? And of course: Does he know other dogs? Male dogs? Females?
Questions upon questions!
The answer:
YES, ELVIS HAS MASTERED ALL THESE POINTS BRILLIANTLY!
AND OUR OTHER DOGS HAVE ALSO ACCEPTED HIM INTO OUR MIDST.
We knew from the start that our time together could be short due to his advanced age and we simply wanted to give him a pleasant and enjoyable retirement with our family.
The shock
After the first consultation with our trusted vet, this window of opportunity seemed to be vanishingly small.
Nevertheless, the curiosity, the heart and the urge to be stroked melted the ice in seconds and we immediately grew fond of this cuddly bear.
Unfortunately, his life clock ran out surprisingly quickly just a few weeks after he moved in with us shortly before Christmas 2023.
We are simply grateful for every moment we were allowed to spend with you dear Elvis.
What remains?
The certainty that we were able to give this cuddly bear, who probably didn’t have it easy in his life, a few more wonderful weeks. The memory of challenging moments but also heart-warming moments. The feeling of having done the right thing. The fact that Elvis managed to immortalise himself in our hearts during our short time together.
